The Maharshi would later remind him, “Without the Scriptures you are like a tree without branches; with Scriptures you are like a tree with many branches.” Ramakrishna had struggled with his own identity for years until he met the Maharshi. He was able to identify his spiritual self by disavowing all forms of worship through which he believed he was different than God himself. This idea of becoming one with the Absolute gave him the freedom to live authentically and completely in accord with his true nature. Eventually, Ramakrishna realized that one’s true self is not found in any particular scriptural canon, but rather within each individual person’s heart itself. Ramakrishna tells us, “If you look within the Heart itself, the whole universe is there.” When Ramakrishna reached this state of self-realization he realized that this was not some private revelation; his own experience had transcended all worldly limitations. He had connected with Brahman (the ultimate reality of existence), finding peace in the realization that although one’s life may appear to be full of pain and struggle, there is ultimately love waiting to be discovered. This transformed him into an instrument of God's grace and mercy for all beings on earth.
